Tsuyang, a mukbang YouTuber with 9.29 million subscribers, was embroiled in controversy over racial discrimination after uploading a video with comedian Jiyoung Kim, who played the role of a Filipino woman named ‘Nitung’. Tzuyang deleted the video and posted an apology.
On the 5th, Tsuyang announced through the YouTube community, “I sincerely apologize for causing concern to Filipino viewers and subscribers with the video with a Korean comedian.”
He said, “I didn’t realize that the content produced this time could hurt someone’s feelings even though it was not intended,” and added, “The video in question has been deleted.” He added, “We will listen deeply to the criticism and comments from viewers and try to think and pay more attention when creating content in the future.”
On the 28th of last month, Tzuyang released a mukbang video with comedian Jiyoung Kim. Ms. Kim appeared as Nitung, a Filipino woman played by herself, in the corner ‘Nitung’s Human Theater’ on KBS2’s ‘Gag Concert’. She played Kim, a Filipino immigrant woman whose Korean husband was in an international marriage. He uses poor Korean or says, “I’m good at giving massages. After the video was released, netizens pointed out that the Nitung character was racist. Domestic netizens responded by saying, “It’s an anachronistic concept,” and “It’s the same as mistaking a foreign YouTuber imitating BTS or Son Heung-min while using poor English for humor.”
Filipino netizens criticized it, saying, “There is no name called Nitung in the Philippines,” “It is blatantly promoting racism,” and “As a Filipino, it is not funny at all.”
Meanwhile, the Nitung character was on the chopping block due to controversy over racial discrimination when the comedy concert was revived in November last year.
