A 30-year-old man who ordered coffee at a Starbucks store and gave a counterfeit check worth 100,000 won was sentenced to prison.

Yesterday (15th), according to the legal community, the 8th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced A to 2 years and 6 months in prison for violating the Illegal Check Control Act and exercising counterfeit securities.

Earlier, on September 22, last year, Mr. A visited a Starbucks store in Mapo-gu, Seoul and ordered a cup of coffee. And after handing out a counterfeit check for 100,000 won, he took 95,900 won as change.

Two hours later, at a cafe located in Gwangjin-gu, I paid another 100,000 won with a counterfeit check and received change.

At 10:07 on the same night, at a motel in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, I paid for my accommodation with a counterfeit check worth 100,000 won and received change. Afterwards, he used counterfeit checks in cafes, convenience stores, and marts across the country.

All the checks had the same serial number. It was found that Mr. A forged a 100,000 won bill by using a color copier to copy and cut both sides of the check on A4 paper. The amount used is 120,000 won.

The court pointed out, “The crime of counterfeiting a check undermines the social trust of the check and undermines the order of transactions, and requires severe punishment.”

He continued, “The damage has not been recovered at all, and there are many criminal records of various types of crimes,” he said.
