A 6.6-magnitude earthquake near Oita, Japan.. Vibration detection in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do

[이데일리 주영로 기자] At 1:08 a.m. on the 22nd, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in a sea area 75 km southeast of Oita in Oita Prefecture (Kyushu), Japan.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the epicenter is 32.70 degrees north latitude and 132.10 degrees east longitude, and the depth of the earthquake is 40 km.

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 6.4, but later revised it to 6.6. In Oita and Miyazaki prefectures close to the epicenter, a maximum seismic intensity of 5 was observed, and several injuries were reported and damage was reported as old buildings collapsed.

Fortunately, there was no tsunami caused by the earthquake, so no major damage was reported.

Vibration was detected in parts of Gyeongnam and Jeollanam-do, including Busan and Yangsan, and reports followed.

A citizen of Yangsan said, “A vibration was felt around 1:13 am. A lot of articles about the earthquake were posted on Mom Cafe, too.”

In Mokpo, Jeollanam-do, two reports were received from the fire department saying they felt weak vibrations at 1:14 and 16 am.

The Korea Meteorological Administration explained that “earthquakes can be felt in Busan, Gyeongnam, and Ulsan areas.”
