The 32-year-old wife of Joaquin Guzman (aka El Chapo), known as the world’s biggest drug lord, has been sentenced to three years in prison in Washington, D.

According to the AP and AFP news agency on the 30th (local time), a Washington federal court sentenced Emma Coronel Icepuro, 32, to three years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Coronel, from a local beauty pageant, married Guzman at the age of 18, and they had twin daughters.

Her husband, Guzman, led Mexico’s most infamous drug trafficking group, the Sinaloa Cartel.

Caught after two escapes, he was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 and is being held at the ADX Federal Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, a state-of-the-art security facility in the United States.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Coronel is accused of participating in a cartel run led by her husband and helping Guzman escape from a Mexican prison in 2015.

It is known that Coronel secretly delivered a GPS-equipped watch into the prison when Guzman used a tunnel to escape from a Mexican prison at the time.

Coronel, who appeared several times during her husband’s trial, was arrested in February at Dulles Airport, Virginia, on charges of conspiracy in drug trafficking.

After the sentencing, Coronel apologized, saying, “I express my sincere regrets for everything I have done.” In response, the judge reportedly asked, “I hope to raise twins in a different environment than before.”

On the other hand, Coronel, who accompanied Guzman’s trial several times, has been attracting attention by appearing with splendid beauty and sophisticated fashion. As his fashion attracted attention, Coronel launched a fashion brand under the name of ‘El Chapo Guzman’.
