Disney’s live-action animated film ‘The Little Mermaid’ received a viewing rating that required parental guidance.
According to FilmRatings.com, an American film rating guide site, on the 5th (Korea time), ‘The Little Mermaid’ with Hollywood actress Halle Bailey received a PG rating, which required guidance from a guardian.
According to the site, the reason why ‘The Little Mermaid’ is rated PG is because it contains some action, elements of danger and horror scenes. Many foreign media said that “Disney films are placed in that scale because they have to be suitable for children.”
‘The Little Mermaid’ isn’t the only live-action Disney film to be rated PG. ‘Cinderella’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and ‘Aladdin’, which were released in the past, were also given a PG rating, which required guidance from guardians.
However, it is known that the reason ‘The Little Mermaid’ received the PG rating is because it contains some horror scenes, and some had interpreted the background of the rating decision in connection with the controversy surrounding the casting of the leading role.
Previously, ‘The Little Mermaid’ suffered from the point that Halle Bailey, who played the main role, “was not suitable for casting” because she was a black actress.
Halle Bailey is a member of the sister R&B duo ‘Chloe & Halle’ formed in 2015. She became famous after uploading a Beyoncé cover video on YouTube.
The director of ‘The Little Mermaid’ previously said of the reason for casting Halle Bailey for the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, “She is a rare talent who possesses not only a beautiful sparkling voice but also a spirit, passion, innocence, and youth.”
However, criticism followed from fans of the original animation that ‘The Little Mermaid cannot be black’. In the original work, red-haired white Ariel was played by black Halle Bailey, and a hashtag campaign called ‘#NotMyAriel’ was launched on social media.
