At least five people were shot dead by a man near the northeastern French city of Metz, near the Luxembourg border, authorities there said on Sunday.

According to them, one of the injured persons is in danger of life, two other victims suffered serious gunshot wounds.

According to the authorities, the shooting took place on Saturday evening. The attacker opened fire from a car on a group of young people in the village of Villerupt, north of the city of Metz in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. According to local officials, the location where the shooting took place is known for drug trafficking.

One of the people shot is a minor, the oldest shooting victim is 30 years old, writes DPA.

The newspaper Le Parisien reported on Sunday that the police had since identified the perpetrator. However, local officials did not confirm this information and continued to refer to him as a fugitive offender.

The newspaper also quoted the office of the local mayor, Pierre Spiazak, according to which it can be assumed that the shooting may have been about settling scores.

In France, people involved in the drug trade often take justice into their own hands, DPA notes. The southern French metropolis of Marseille is particularly affected in this regard.
