A new lounge offers a relaxed and welcoming environment for dementia patients

A new Dementia Room at St. Mary's Hospital was officially opened. This Lounge was specifically designed to create a relaxed and welcoming environment.

With the indigenous and familiar features, the room offers a very different place to be away from hospital wards for patients who may spend their days in bed or on the bedside.

Quiet quiet space

“A busy ward can be very frightened for people with dementia and so the lounge can offer them a quiet and tranquil space, so they don't feel overwhelmed. The lounge provides a beautiful fireplace with comfortable chairs and is provided with historical items such as old newspapers, books, ornaments and grammatical phones to encourage memories and to remember.

“The Lounge will enable staff to engage in meaningful activities with the patients but will also enable them to socialize with other patients.” T

Design work by Hedley Finn
Hedley Finn, who led the lounge design work, is designing using the King's Fund dementia design principles that make the environment and its impact on people with dementia. a new lounge can improve their well-being by spending time in this carefully designed and managed therapeutic and tranquil space.

Additional support from St. Mary's Friends
The group funded the first £ 4,000 and the additional support from St. Mary's Friends, who were initially funded by the Patient Disability Working Group (PDWG).

The Patient's lounge was developed and opened within Colwell ward in the hospital.
