A second Security Council resolution condemning the annexation of Russian territory… Russian veto exercise

A UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia to annex territories occupied in Ukraine was rejected by Russian resistance on the 30th (local time).

The resolution, initiated by the United States and Albania, was put to a vote at the Security Council meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the same day, but was rejected after Russia, a party and permanent member, exercise her veto power as expected.

Ten countries voted in favour, and four countries abstained, including China.

The draft resolution is a referendum on the annexation of Russia held in four occupied territories in Ukraine from the 23rd to the 27th: the Eastern Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the Lugansk People’s Republic (Ukrainian name Luhansk) (LPR), the South Zaporiza Oblast and Kherson Oblast It was declared “illegal and ineffective”.

He urged all UN member states not to approve the results of the referendum and territorial changes in those areas.

Following the failure of a legally binding resolution by the Security Council, the United States is expected to instead follow an irrevocable UN General Assembly resolution.
