More than a month after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a Russian sniper who killed 40 Ukrainians in the war has been captured by Ukrainian forces.

The Sun reported on the 28th (local time) that the Serbian sniper Irina Starikova (41), called ‘Baghira’, was left wounded on the battlefield.

Earlier, since 2014, Starkova has been serving with Russian separatists in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, killing dozens of soldiers and civilians. Because of this she was a wanted target for the Ukrainian army.

“The Russians knew I was wounded and had a chance to save him, but they left,” Starkova told Ukrainian media.

The Ukrainian military authorities also announced the news of the capture of Starkova through their official Twitter account on the 26th.

Authorities posted several photos of Starkova, saying, “In 2014, the sniper Baghira who shot our prisoners of war was captured in an area occupied by pro-Russian separatist rebels.”

George Levishvilly, a researcher at the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, UK, also shared the news, saying, “We have captured a notorious sniper. He is charged with the murder of 40 Ukrainians, including civilians.”

According to the Peacemaker Center, which studies crimes committed by pro-Russian separatist rebels, Starkova was awarded the Order of George Cross for her achievements.

He also has two daughters, aged 11 and 9, and his remarried husband is also a Belarusian soldier, fighting for the pro-Russian separatist militants.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the Ukrainian army advanced toward the Russian positions around Kiiu, and succeeded in retaking the strategically important town of Irfin north of Kiiu and a village on the outskirts of the second city of Kharkiv.
