[Adolygiad Mini Yajiuma]A story that became scary when using a loss prevention tag on iPhone-PC Watch

Connect SmartTrack

Due to the nature of my job, I often handle confidential information, and I must avoid the complete loss of my property. I have never lost my belongings in my life, but just in case, I introduced Anker’s “Eufy Security SmartTrack Link (SmartTrack Link)” loss prevention tag and put it in my work backpack.

The anti-loss tag is a device that tracks location information using a GPS or Bluetooth connection to prevent the loss of luggage, and allows you to check the location of your luggage from your smartphone or PC.

SmartTrack Link is a loss prevention tag with a body size of about 37 x 37 x 6.5 mm, a weight of about 10 g, and a price of 2,990 yen. The maximum communication range is 80m (about 10-15m for indoor use), and there is a hole to connect it with a key chain.

Has a function that allows you to check the location by calling the smartphone and SmartTrack Link bi-directionally, and a “misplacement prevention function” that will notify you about 3 minutes after the SmartTrack Link leaves the range Bluetooth connection. It can be used on Android, but Apple devices support Find My.

To use SmartTrack Link, install the dedicated app “eufy Security” on your smartphone, follow the instructions in the app to pair SmartTrack Link with your smartphone, and connect it to your property that you don’t want to lose.

By the way, as the tag emits a rather loud beep when pairing, it can be a bit embarrassing to set up in a quiet office, so be careful.

You can also check the location of the tag from the “Search” app.

This product is the first anti-loss tag for the author, but what I thought was a useful function after using it was when the person who picked up the lost property reads the QR code on the tag , the owner’s contact information It is a “lost mode” that allows you to restore

Also, I don’t use it because I keep the tag in my bag, but if the tag is attached to a small item like a key chain, the function to call the smartphone is also convenient (as I often lose my smartphone at home). thought

When lost mode is turned on, you can get contact information by reading the QR code on the back.

While loss prevention tags are convenient in this way, they can also be abused by their very nature. For example, it can be used for monitoring purposes, such as tracking a person’s location by hiding it in someone else’s property. Timely, while I was writing this article, did someone track my location with a loss prevention tag? I came across what appears to be a situation, so I’d like to introduce it.

As for the circumstances, I suddenly got a notification from the “search” app while returning home on the train that “an unknown loss prevention tag was found”. When you open the app, the route you took is displayed in red on the map, and it appears to be sending your location information to a third party in real time.

After following the app’s instructions to stop sending location information for now, I tried playing audio to search for unknown tags, but the option to play audio didn’t appear.

When I open the Search app, the route I took is displayed in red on the map, and the location information appears to have been sent to a third party…

Maybe, it was a holiday that day and I didn’t have SmartTrack Link, and I was on the train, so the person who got the tag happened to be close to me for a while, so this notification was being sent display deaf.

As Apple describes annoying tracking, if you’ve been carrying an unknown Find My network accessory for a while, it’s ready to notify you to stop tracking.

Having said that, I wasn’t feeling well, so before I went home, I stopped at the park and took all my belongings out of my bag and looked for the tag, but as expected, I couldn’t find it to him. In the end, I decided to go home in a fog.

The Find My app also provides access to information such as instructions for deactivating your inventory.

It’s been two weeks since that night and luckily so far I haven’t had any problems. However, I felt more fear than I thought, and the days I spent in fear responded well.

This incident is very likely a misunderstanding on my part, but it might have been beneficial to learn how to deal with the loss prevention tag being abused. The introduction of SmartTrack Link would have been valuable to me just by being able to gain such awareness.
