Adrian Newey: F1 machine designer who has been running for 30 years[F1-Gate .com]

For the famous designer who has produced many champion cars, the podium of the Mexican Grand Prix was a special opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of F1’s first victory.

Some of F1’s big records are not easy to understand. It may seem surprising given the sport’s data paranoid nature, but there are many “unknown feats” in F1, especially for teams and people who have been active in the scene for a long time. ..

This year, Red Bull Racing is celebrating its 17th year in F1. Although relatively “newcomer” compared to some of the long-established teams on the grid, it still has some record breaks and historic anniversaries at almost every race weekend.
The Mexican Grand Prix also celebrated one such event, celebrating what happened long before Red Bull Racing was born in the world.

Adrian Newey, who received the Constructors’ Trophy, was seen by Max Verstappen, who had his 19th career win, beside the podium with his trophy, but this podium in Newey was his first F1 victory. It also served as the 30th anniversary.

As of 2021, Newway is one of the oldest in the F1 scene. His commitment to designing with drafting boards is widely known, but his methodology differs from the mainstream not only in “prefering mechanical pencils over CAD.”

Learning the basics of machine design in an era when the entire design room shared a single desk, Newway was the last generation of designers to get a bird’s eye view of everything from nose cones to gearboxes. is. Most F1 design rooms in recent years have hundreds of staff across many departments, each of whom is a specialist with a specialized field. It is truly spectacular that the parts they individually created are in harmony with each other, and it must be an engineering victory. However, Newway’s horizons are a little wider.

Considering the length of time a team has been in Newway and the impact his work has had on each team, the number of wins his F1 car has brought cannot be clearly quantified. There is a place.

But I’m confident that Newey’s unparalleled success as a winning contract F1 car designer went from the victory Riccardo Patrese on the Williams FW14 to the RB16B in the 1991 season at Outdromo Hermanos Rodriguez. It means that Max who got on it has continued until the victory he mentioned the other day on the same circuit.

Shortly after graduating from college, he became a race aeronautical designer, and after undergoing race engineering, made great success in designing sports cars and indie cars before entering the world of F1 design. Although he wasn’t successful with his first FORCE team, he later built his reputation at the March / Leyton House with an impressive group of F1 cars that threatened the top ranks.

However, it was during Williams’ time that the evaluation of Newway was fixed. The Williams Renault series of cars, co-designed by Patrick Head and Newway, won five constructors’titles and four driver’s titles from the 1992 to 1997 seasons. Later, Newway moved to McLaren and added three more titles to his achievements.

At the time of the Mexican Grand Prix in the 1991 season, such success was a distant future, but this battle was a catalyst for drawing that future. The Williams FW14 was fast, but couldn’t show its potential in the opening five races, recording seven retirements behind the podium finish three times. Nigel Mansell, who had been leading the race in a relaxed manner, had a disgraceful stop on the final lap at the Canadian Grand Prix, which was the previous race of the Mexican Grand Prix.

However, in Mexico, all the gears meshed, and Patrese and Mansell monopolized the front row in qualifying, and received the checkered flag as it was, and Mansell also recorded the fastest lap. From here, Williams started his march and won 10 races and 6 wins since the Mexican Grand Prix. In the end, they were involved in the constructors’ title battle until the final race, but the omissions in the early part of the season echoed and did not reach McLaren Honda. However, the FW14B introduced in the 1992 season changed the power map completely.

While at Williams and McLaren, Newway was positioned as a key person in the resurrection of the old man. However, Newey’s work in the 2006 season when he joined Red Bull Racing was so different that he decided to work on a project to build a machine that could challenge the title from scratch. The project, which will eventually achieve 74 wins and 8 championships, is still ongoing.

In recent years, Newway has not been with all races. Due to the constant design process of F1 cars and the overcrowding of race calendars, Newway and Pierre Washe (technical director) take turns in most cases.

At the same time as the race zone, Newway walks around the grid with the clipboard in his hand, studying his rivals and continuing his occasional sketching routine. The new aerodynamic regulations introduced in the 2022 season and the chance to design a car from scratch seem to go well with his skill set. Newway says:

“I really enjoy changing regulation because I can look at the solution from the basics in the face of a blank slate. Stability makes F1 terribly boring. Nobody brings in new ideas. , The established themes are only slightly changed. The more resources you have, the more you can prepare the same ones repeatedly, so the game is decided recently depending on whether you can collect resources. This may also be one way. Maybe it’s not as exciting as working on something new. “

But it’s probably premature to talk about the 2022 season. After all, Red Bull Racing Honda hasn’t finished designing the current machine RB16B yet. There are still three races left in the 2021 season, and the driver’s and constructors’ title battles have become a rare close battle in recent years, so the desire to continue improving the RB16B has not disappeared. With 30 years of success, Newway’s desire to win more hasn’t diminished.

“I’m motivated because I enjoy my job. When I first joined Red Bull Racing, my wish was to be a team that could win. My dream was to win the Constructors’ Champion. Achieving the goal was very special, but my daily life did not change. I enjoy working for this team. It’s a rewarding team and the atmosphere is good, so I enjoyed designing. I’m involved. As long as I’m having fun, I’ll continue this job. ”
