Advertisements for Mongolian pig eye makeup continue to quell discrimination against cars

Public opinion in the mainland has recently paid attention to the use of Mongolian pig eye makeup for local models and other characters, which is suspected of vilifying the Chinese. Internal media reported on Tuesday (28th) that the latest advertisement of the German car brand Pingzhi was also punished by mainland netizens. Netizens criticized that car companies wanted to use the recent turmoil to speculate on their new cars, describing them as “consuming Chinese.” The car company involved has not yet responded.

The car company involved aired a 50-second advertisement on Weibo on Christmas last Saturday (25th). In the film, the makeup of the female model was turned into a black eye. Netizens condemned that car companies still upload controversial advertisements, knowing that the image of pigseye caused turmoil in the mainland recently. Car companies even deliberately push advertisements, obviously in order to gain attention.

Some netizens pointed out that pig-eye makeup is a historically stereotyped definition of East Asians in the West, which is deeply insulting to China; they are not criticizing the looks of the models involved. However, there are others who think that advertising is not wrong and call for more open-mindedness and tolerance.
