‘Ah, sent off’… Leipzig defender bittersweet reunion with Manchester City fans

[인터풋볼] Reporter Oh Jong-heon = Angelino (24, RB Leipzig) returned to the home stadium of his former team, but was sent off and left only regrets.

Leipzig lost to Manchester City 3-6 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Group A match for the 2021-22 season held at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England on the 16th at 4 am (Korean time).

On this day, Leipzig used the 4-2-3-1 formation. Silva was at the forefront, followed by Forsbury, Olmo and Nkunku. In midfield, Reimer and Adams were paired up, with Angelino, Orban, Klostermann and Mukiele responsible for the four backs. Goulash kept the goal.

Against this, Manchester City took out a 4-3-3 formation. Grealish, Torres and Marez took the top three, while Silva, Rodri, and The Bruyne appeared as midfielders. For the 4 back, Zinchenko, Ake, Dias and Cancelo worked together, and Ederson wore the goalkeeper gloves.

It was a brawl with nine goals scored by both teams. Manchester City’s Ake took the lead in the 16th minute. Then, in the 28th minute, Mukiele’s own goal opened up the gap further. Leipzig counterattacked with a header from Nkunku in the 42nd minute of the first half, but Marez conceded a penalty kick in extra time.

Leipzig ignited the pursuit. In the 6th minute of the second half, Nkunku finished with a header from Olmo’s cross. However, five minutes later, Grealish managed to avoid Leipzig’s pursuit with a sharp take-up shot. Leipzig conceded two more goals despite Nkunku completing a hat-trick in the 28th minute of the second half, losing to Manchester City.

It must have been a day I would like to forget, especially for Leipzig left-back Angelino. Angelino left Manchester City in the January 2020 transfer window and joined Leipzig on loan. He immediately took over the starting position and decided to go on loan with the option of a full transfer to Leipzig once again last season. And last February, the full transfer option was activated.

Ahead of Manchester City away, Angelino said, “It’s a strange feeling. I never thought I would play in another team’s jersey at Etihad Stadium. Manchester City are one of the best teams in the world.”

However, Angelino, who started that day, was sent off with a cumulative red card in the 34th minute of the second half when the team was being led 3-5. Soccer statistics media ‘whoscored.com’ criticized Angelino, giving him the lowest rating of 4.3 for both teams. Manchester City fans applauded Angelino as he left the stadium right after the red card, but it must have been his worst day ever.
