19 days later, in Beijing, the capital of China, where the Winter Olympics will be held, a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) omicron mutation was confirmed.

According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 15th, the city of Beijing announced that at 8:00 pm (local time) on the same day, there was one confirmed case of Omicron mutation in Haidian District.

The patient has not traveled outside Beijing in the past 14 days and has not come into contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. The route of infection is not clear. As a result, Beijing said that it is taking a large-scale lockdown around the confirmed person and is conducting an investigation.

China has strengthened its quarantine measures, such as conducting three rounds of complete tests as new cases of omicron mutations have recently emerged in Tianjin, which is adjacent to Beijing. However, as university students from Tianjin travel to various parts of the country for vacation, Omicron is being discovered in Guangdong, Liaoning, and Henan.

If the omicron mutation further spreads, it is feared that it will have a significant impact on the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Fang Xinghuo (龐星火), deputy director of the Beijing City Center for Disease Control and Prevention, explained that there was one confirmed case of COVID-19 in the city, and the virus sequence showed the same characteristics as the omicron mutation.

Various samples taken from the patient’s home tested positive for the omicron mutation, but two family members living together were confirmed to have negative nucleic acid test results, Fang Singhuub said.
