[서울=뉴시스] Reporter Jabi Yoo = Airbnb, a global accommodation sharing platform, has filed a lawsuit against the New York City Lodging Regulation Act.

According to the Associated Press on the 1st (local time), New York City will implement a sharing accommodation regulation law requiring accommodation owners to register with the city and report landlord information to limit illegal short-term rentals of next month.

Airbnb has argued that the regulatory measures are “extreme and oppressive” and a “de facto ban on short-term rentals” that the company has no choice but to sue.

“Overall, these listings seem intended to drive short-term rental deals out of New York City entirely,” Airbnb said.

San Francisco-based Airbnb filed a lawsuit in Manhattan state court. Three Airbnb hosts have also filed a lawsuit against New York City.

A spokesman for New York Mayor Eric Adams said the city would also consider the lawsuit.

The New York City regulation bill comes as some residents raise concerns about noise and safety. Critics also point out that the growing market for short-term rentals driven by Airbnb is driving house prices higher in tourist cities and creating a shortage of affordable housing for residents.

On the same day, the popular Italian tourist city of Florence announced an immediate ban on new short-term rentals in its historic center.
