All Bangladeshis to be brought back from Sudan: Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that all Bangladeshis staying in war-torn Sudan will be brought back home safely.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sehli Sabreen, gave this information at a regular briefing on Thursday (May 18).

Clashes have been ongoing since April 15 between the Sudanese army and members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In the last one month, this conflict has taken a terrible shape. More than four hundred people have been killed so far.

Sehli Sabreen said, the Bangladesh government has started the process to bring back the Bangladeshis staying in Sudan. Meanwhile, 721 Bangladeshis have been brought back to Sudan at government expense. There are 1,500 Bangladeshis in the North African country. Among them, 800 Bangladeshis expressed their desire to return to the country at the initial stage.

He said that a consular from the Consulate General of Bangladesh in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia went to Bandar Sudan to assist the Bangladesh Embassy in Sudan and worked tirelessly to repatriate Bangladesh. After the safe repatriation of 721 Bangladeshis, he returned to Jeddah. The first 650 Bangladeshis arrived at Bandar Sudan last May 2 in 13 buses chartered by the Bangladeshi Embassy in Sudan from Khartoum.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that the Bangladeshi ambassador there tried to send them to Jeddah on a Saudi Navy ship. But there were not enough ships of the Saudi Navy. Later, 135 Bangladeshis were sent to Jeddah in three military planes of the Saudi Air Force. Along with those 135 people, 136 Bangladeshis were brought to Bangladesh by Bangladesh Biman’s regular flight.

Then the Bangladesh Biman flight with 239 Sudanese migrants landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on May 12. The remaining Bangladeshis based in Sudan are being brought to Jeddah by Badr Airlines at government expense. Efforts are being made to bring them back to Dhaka soon, added Sehli Sabreen.
