Alpine F1 CEO Laurent Rossi says Fernando Alonso will not enjoy the number one driver status against Esteban Ocon in the 2021 season.
Two-time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso, who was the last to leave F1 in the 2018 McLaren Championship, will return to F1 for the first time in two years with the newly rebranded Alpine F1.
For Fernando Alonso, this will be the third season of the Enstone-based team, which won the titles in 2005 and 2006 in a row.
Alpine F1 announced the 2021 F1 machine “A521” on Tuesday, March 2nd. Alpine F1 CEO Laurent Rossi argued that neither driver would be favored at the 2021 F1 World Championship.
When asked if Alpine F1 has number 1 or number 2 in the contract with the driver, Laurent Rossi commented, “There is no such thing.”
“Honestly, I don’t think there are many teams that have such a thing, or at least not in our team. Drivers have to run as fast as possible and challenge each other.”
“It’s like a healthy race, and that’s it. There are no instructions or number one drivers.”
In 2020, Renault F1 won the podium for the first time since participating in Works. He won three podiums in 17 races and finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Alpine F1 aims to compete regularly on the podium in 2021, a one-year “transition period” before the drastic regulation changes are implemented in 2022. After that, he depicts the ambition to return to the path of victory in the new era of F1.
“It’s clear that it’s actually a year of transition for everyone, not just us,” Laurent Rossi explained.
“This year is an improved version of last year. Of course, it’s a little different, but the design aspects of both the engine side and the chassis side are evolution, not disruption.”
“So I want to get at least as good as last year, that is, to be a constant podium candidate and to have a good fight to get great results during the race.”
“Our goal in the new era of F1 is pretty positive,” added Laurent Rossi.
“We want to tackle a new era with high ambition, and in the medium term we first designed the podium process and team with determination to compete for the top.”
“After that, in the long run, I want to compete not only in the race, but also in the championship, the drivers’and constructors’ championships.”
“This is what we want to achieve by the end of the era. Instead of entering the field in the hope of success, we will enter the field in the hope of winning.”
Alpine F1 is planning a shakedown of the A521 at Silverstone on Wednesday, March 3, with Esteban Ocon scheduled to make its first run.
