In response to North Korea’s continued missile provocations into the new year, the United States has again put pressure on the UN Security Council.

The United States requested a meeting of the Security Council regarding North Korea’s recent missile launch on the 18th local time, AFP news agency reported, citing a diplomatic source.

Britain, France, Ireland, Mexico and Albania are said to have joined the US Security Council request.

An anonymous diplomat interviewed by AFP said that the Security Council meeting will be held in private on the 20th, early in the morning of the 21st, Korean time.

“We will continue to increase pressure on North Korea,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Washington Post.

The request for this meeting is in response to North Korea’s provocations since the beginning of this year, such as launching a short-range ballistic missile that appears to be a ‘North Korean version of Atacms’ on the 17th.

A South Korean foreign ministry official said, “It is expected that members of the Security Council will exchange views on the recent situation related to the North Korean launch.”
