‘Appointment of dear Varghese without primary qualification’; Complaint to the Governor and VC

The Save University Committee has lodged a complaint with the Governor and VC alleging that Dr. Priya Varghese, the wife of the Chief Minister’s Private Secretary KK Ragesh, is not qualified to apply for the post of Associate Professor at Kannur University. The complaint was based on a RTI document received by Senator Dr RK Biju. However, Dr Priya Varghese told Manorama News that she had quit her job because she had all the educational qualifications required by UGC rules.

Priya Varghese received her PhD in 2019. According to RTI documents, he was appointed on deputation as the Director of Student Services at Kannur University for two years. He re-entered the teaching post at Kerala Varma College, Thrissur in June 2021. He also became the Assistant Director of the Language Institute in July 2021. According to the Save University committee, Priya has only one month of teaching experience after earning her PhD. The committee also points out that the High Court judgment of 2014 states that work experience after obtaining the minimum educational qualification prescribed for all appointments should be considered.

The affidavit submitted by Priya along with the application states that she was a teacher at Kerala Varma College for nine years from March 2012 to 2021. Dr. Priya Manorama told News that the 2018 LUGC Act only stipulates that eight years of teaching experience is required and that it is not required to have obtained a PhD.
