Arrested 7 times, including ‘Inhyukdang Incident’… Kang Chang-deok, an advisor to the Democratic Party of Korea, dies

Chang-deok Kang, a living witness of the democratization movement in the Daegu area, and the Daegu City Party adviser to the Democratic Party of Korea, passed away at around 12:59 p.m. on the 3rd at Yeungnam University Hospital. At the age of 93 (years old).

Born in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, on November 30, 1927, the deceased participated in the Chosun Founding Association, an anti-Japanese secret society organized by Yeo Woon-hyeong (呂運亨, 1886-1947) in August 1944. Starting with being detained in a tunnel for 10 days, he was arrested seven times, twice during the Japanese colonial rule, once during the U.S. Military Government, once under President Syngman Rhee, once during Prime Minister Yang Sang, and twice under President Park Chung-hee. took the lead in the movement.

After self-taught, he passed the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government Civil Service Recruitment Examination in November 1944 and worked as a civil servant. also did Politically, he took a single path in the activities of innovative parties such as the Working People’s Party and the Social Popular Party. Before the 7th Presidential Election in 1971, he formed the Gyeongbuk Council for the Protection of Democracy and was serving as the general secretary. He served eight years and eight months in prison. In 2006, he was recognized as involved in the democratization movement, and in 2007, he was acquitted in a retrial.

While living in prison and taking painkillers due to the aftereffects of torture and being designated as a beneficiary of basic livelihood security, in December 1987, the ‘National Autonomous Peaceful Reunification Conference (People’s Tong)’ was formed in Daegu, and the National Federation for National Democracy (Jeon Min-ryun) He was active in the New Democratic Alliance, the Daegu Citizens’ Solidarity for Peaceful Unification, the Unification Solidarity, and the Democratic and Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. The Daegu City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea issued a commemorative commentary titled ‘Your life was like a flame’ on the same day, saying, “I pray for the death of torturer Kang, who dedicated his life to democracy and peaceful unification, and deeply express the sincerity for democracy shown by the deceased through his actions. I will engrave it,” he lamented.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter (Kang Sang-ho, Kang Sang-woo, Kang Sang-goo, and Jo Tae-im). The mortuary was prepared in Room 201 of a specialized funeral home in Daegu, and the funeral took place on the 5th, and the burial place was the first cemetery in Daegu Hyundai Park. ☎ 053-965-7201
