The target of the DART spacecraft, weighing 550 kg, is a 160 m diameter satellite ‘Dimorphos’ orbiting the asteroid ‘Didymos’ about 11 million km from Earth. At the end of September next year, it collides with Dimorphos at a speed of 6.6 km/s.

If the experiment is successful, Didymos’s speed is slightly slowed down, and the radius of its orbit becomes smaller.
