[천지일보=홍보영 기자] As the spread of Omicron mutations is strong, there were close to 50,000 confirmed cases nationwide by 6 pm on the 12th, Saturday.
According to the quarantine authorities and each local government, from 00:00 to 6pm on the same day, 48,025 new coronavirus infections (COVID-19) were confirmed in 17 cities and provinces across the country. This is 4,510 more than the previous highest figure of the same time period on the 10th (43,515).
In addition, by 6 pm the previous day, there were 5087 more than the total number of 42,938, and it is 2.3 times higher than the previous 5 days (21,338) a week ago. Compared to the 29th of last month (1665 people) two weeks ago, the number is about 4.5 times higher.
As there is still time until midnight when the counting ends, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 13th is expected to increase even more.
As the Lunar New Year holiday, when face-to-face contact and movement increased, the number of large-scale cases seems to continue throughout this week. The quarantine authorities predicted that there could be 130,000 to 170,000 new confirmed cases per day by the end of this month, and the National Institute of Mathematical Sciences predicted that up to 360,000 per day at the beginning of next month.
On this day, there were 31,158 (62.8%) new confirmed cases in the metropolitan area and 17,867 (37.2%) in non-metropolitan areas. By province, Gyeonggi 15,942, Seoul 1532, Incheon 3684, Busan 2848, Daegu 2254, Gyeongbuk 2056, Chungnam 1833, Daejeon 1418, Gwangju 1402, Chungbuk 1229, Gangwon 924, There were confirmed cases in 17 cities and provinces across the country, including 849 in Jeollanam-do, 806 in Ulsan, 788 in Jeonbuk, 569 in Gyeongnam, 504 in Jeju and 387 in Sejong.
In one week from the 6th, the number of new confirmed cases was 38,688 → 35,281 → 36,717 → 49,552 → 54,121 → 53,926 → 54,941. That is an average of about 46,175 cases per day.
