At least 20 people killed in heavy rains and landslides in southern India

At least 22 people have been killed in landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

Kerala state officials said the bodies were recovered from the most affected areas, Kotanam and Iduki, and rescue operations are still ongoing.

The Kerala state government has set up about 100 relief facilities while issuing an emergency order for residents.

The Indian National Disaster Response Authority and the Army have dispatched support personnel to the scene to search for the missing person.

Prime Minister Narenda Modi said on the same day, “I pray for the safety of all residents,” and said that relief work is in progress for the victims.

In 2018, the Indian state of Kerala also lost 223 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands in floods caused by heavy rains.
