At least 40 killed in Bulgaria bus accident

At least 46 passengers were killed in a bus accident today (23rd) in Bulgaria, an Eastern European country.

The bus was caught in flames after collided with a guard rail while traveling on a highway in the capital Sofia to visit Istanbul, Turkey at around 2 am today.

Local authorities said at least 46 of the 53 people on board had died and seven were being treated in hospitals.

An official from the fire department told a local broadcaster, “It is not known at this time whether the bus collided after it caught on fire, or if it collided and caught fire.”

Most of the passengers are North Macedonian nationals, and they are said to have been involved in an accident while returning to Skopje after a trip to Turkey.

Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Boyko Borisov told reporters at the scene of the accident, “I have never seen such a horrific sight in my life.”

Meanwhile, North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said it was in talks with the Bulgarian government to address the accident.
