(Incheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Song-ah and Hong Hyun-ki = An active professional basketball player was caught by the police for driving under the influence and lying to the police officer.

The Incheon Central Police Station announced on the 21st that it had booked without detention Cheon Ki-beom (27), a member of the Samsung Thunders professional basketball team, on charges of drunk driving and hierarchical obstruction of public duties under the Road Traffic Act.

On the afternoon of the 19th, Chun was charged with driving the Grandeur while intoxicated on a road in Unseo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon.

At 9:20 pm on the same day, the police received a report that “there was a vehicle crossing the stairs,” and rushed to the scene and found Mr. Chun sitting in the back of the vehicle. Chun’s girlfriend, woman A in her 20s, was sitting in the passenger seat.

The stairway the vehicle was crossing is at a dead end of the road, and it connects the hillside with commercial houses and the road below, so it is usually used as a shortcut by nearby residents.

When the police asked who the driver was at the time, Mr. Chun claimed, “The driver drove me here,” and presented the driver’s phone number.

However, as a result of contacting the police, an insurance company official, not an agent, answered the phone.

Afterwards, Mr. A exchanged words with Mr. Chun that he was driving, but the police found that was not true and checked the nearby CCTV to confirm Mr. Chun’s driving.

The blood alcohol levels of Mr. Chun and Mr. A, measured by the police at the time, were above 0.03%, the level of license suspension.

A police official said, “A person who made a false statement was also arrested on charges of concealing the criminal.

Chun is a player who was selected by Samsung with the 4th pick in the 2016 rookie draft and has been active. Before entering a professional career, he played as a primary guard at Yonsei University and played as a representative for each age group.

He averaged 4.1 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in 196 regular games in his professional career.

This season, after completing his military service at Sangmu, he returned to the military in December of last year, and played an average of 18 minutes in 9 games, averaging 4.0 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.9 rebounds.

Samsung entered the all-star break after the game against Ulsan Hyundai Mobis on the 12th, and the second half of the season begins with an away game against Jeonju KCC on the 22nd.

KBL, which oversees professional basketball, decided to hold a financial committee meeting at the KBL Center in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul at 10 am on the 22nd to discuss disciplinary action.

It seems that Samsung, the club it belongs to, will also consider its own disciplinary action.

In May of last year, when Kim Jin-young (24), a member of the company, had an accident while driving under the influence of alcohol, he was suspended from participating in KBL’s 27 regular league games and fined 7 million won, and was suspended from 54 games and fined 10 million won, separate from disciplinary action for 120 hours of community service. He was given a self-discipline of 240 hours of community service.
