Before the match against Japan, the German national team shut their mouths… Against banning rainbow armbands

[골닷컴, 카타르 도하] Reporter Kim Hyeong-joong = The German national team, which could not wear the rainbow colored captain’s armband as a symbol of diversity, protested to FIFA through silence.

Germany will play against Japan in the first leg of Group E of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar on the 23rd at 10:00pm (Korea time). Before the match, the 11 best players of the German national team showed their mouths closed while taking a commemorative photo.

This is in opposition to FIFA’s ban on wearing rainbow colored armbands at the World Cup. The rainbow armband is interpreted as a symbol of diversity and human rights. Initially, the captains of seven national teams including Germany, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Wales, Switzerland and Denmark decided to take part in the World Cup match wearing rainbow colored armbands. Before the competition, it included the meaning of protecting the human rights of Qatari workers and opposing discrimination.

However, FIFA threatened to issue a warning to those wearing rainbow colored armbands, and in the end, seven teams had no choice but to wear regular armbands. FIFA heard the rationale that only the armbands they provided could be worn in FIFA sponsored competitions, and said they could not use rainbow colored armbands.

In opposition to this, members of the German national team protested FIFA’s action by holding their mouths during the commemorative photo session of the first match of the tournament.

The German Football Association also tweeted, “We wanted the runners to wear armbands that symbolize the values of the German national team: diversity and mutual respect. Together with other countries, we want to’ n voices be heard.” Announced.
