Beijing Olympics ‘not available to the general public’ … Overseas direct ball blockade?

◀ anchor ▶

Following last year’s Tokyo Olympics, the Beijing Winter Olympics will be held without a general audience.

Due to the spread of Omicron, it was decided to allow only partially mobilized spectators to enter, but following the diplomatic boycotts of major countries, even spectators become impossible to enter, which seems to affect the success of the tournament.

Correspondent Lee Hae-in from Beijing will deliver.

The opening ceremony of the China National Sports Festival in Xi’an last September.

About 46,000 spectators watched without masks.

At that time, China said it was a rehearsal for the Olympics and showed confidence that it would be different from the Tokyo Olympics, which were held without fans.

However, the Beijing Winter Olympics, which are approaching for the first half of the year, were finally held without the general audience.

Due to the spread of COVID-19, we have decided not to sell tickets.

The Olympic organizers said instead that they decided to allow admission to the stadium only to selected people.

The stadium is expected to be filled with mobilized spectators, and the target and size were not disclosed.

“We request that you strictly follow the Corona 19 quarantine policy before, after, and during the game.”

In Beijing, where the first Omicron confirmed on the 15th, two additional confirmed cases have emerged, the residence is locked down, and corona tests are being carried out for residents.

With the possibility that the first confirmed person who has never left Beijing may have been infected by mail sent overseas, strengthening quarantine for international mail is also being considered.

Beijing Municipal authorities have ordered that overseas direct purchases be minimized and international mail should be opened outside the home, wearing a mask and gloves.

China was worried about whether to enter the spectators until the last minute because it wanted to show off that it had successfully hosted the Olympics despite pressure from the West, including the United States.

However, with the mutation of the Omicron that spread to Beijing, these expectations were dashed.
