Spanish Olympic Committee President Blanco recently stated that he firmly supports the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and opposes the politicization of sports.
Blanco met with Yao Fei, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Spain on the 24th of this month. During the meeting, Blanco said that the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics is imminent, and the Spanish Winter Olympics athletes have made preparations to show their skills, and the Spanish Olympic Committee firmly supports the Beijing Winter Olympics to be held as scheduled.
As early as last April, Blanco sent letters to Cai Qi, chairman of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, and Gou Zhongwen, chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee, respectively, expressing his full support for Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. He expressed his belief that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will be as shocking and unforgettable as the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a unique organization. As the first city in the world to host the Summer and Winter Olympics, Beijing is sure to be a success.
Blanco also emphasized his opposition to the politicization of sports in his meeting with Yao Fei. In fact, in an interview with Spanish media in December last year, Blanco also mentioned that the decision of the United States not to send government officials to the Beijing Winter Olympics was a “purely political decision”, which “damaged the Olympic movement and the whole society”; he also said at the time: “In fact, almost all the athletes will be there by then. And once the Olympics start, the important thing is the competition itself.”

In Blanco’s view, China is experienced and well-prepared in epidemic control. He believes that China will surely dedicate a safe, successful and exciting Winter Olympics to the world. “We firmly believe that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will have an excellent organization and receive support from all over the world,” he said in an interview with the media.
