Bengali musician Sandhya Mukherjee has turned down the Padma award

New Delhi: Famous Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee has turned down the Padma award. The singer was contacted by central government officials on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the awarding of the Padma Shri. But Sandhya Mukherjee’s daughter Soumi Sengupta said the award was rejected.

Amma, who has been in the Bengali music industry for decades, is 90 years old. Soumi Sengupta said it was disrespectful to present the award now.

Do not mix this with politics. My mother is beyond politics. Soumi Sengupta added that the award was rejected because she felt it was disrespectful to her mother.

Born in 1931 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Sandhya Mukherjee became a Hindi singer at the age of 17. She has sung in many films in Hindi and Bengali. In 1971, she won the National Film Award for Best Singer for her performances in Jay Jayanti and Nishi Padma. He has been honored with the Banga-Vibhushan, the highest honor in Bengal.
