Sevilla ∙ Spain coach Louis Enrique’s famous ‘betting game’ collapses again. Spain had to settle for a draw with Poland (1–1) despite having possession of the ball for three quarters of the game. Spain take the lead in the 25th minute through Alvaro Morata. Robert Lewandowski’s header in the 54th minute equalized for Poland (1–1).
In the 58th minute, Gerard Moreno scored from the penalty spot. Spain’s misfortune was complete when the ball bounced off the post and bounced off Morata. Spain are 3rd in Group E with 2 points from 2 games. Sweden (4) and Slovakia (3) are in the top two in the group, with Spain next playing Slovakia on the 23rd. If they win, Spain can reach the knockout stage.
Poland can be happy that Lewandowski, who did not score against Sweden, was able to find the target yesterday. Juventus goalkeeper Voicheck Stenci’s excellent saves also helped Poland. The setback is that Spain do not have a good finisher as they continue to play without much change from the style they won when they won the 2010 World Cup.
