(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ryu Ji-bok = U.S. President Joe Biden said on the 29th (local time) that Omicron, a new mutation of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), is of concern, but not enough to cause panic.
According to Reuters, President Biden said in a speech at the White House on the same day that he would soon see a case of Omicron in the United States.
“We will overcome this new mutation,” he said, urging Americans to vaccinate and get booster shots.
He also reiterated, “Don’t wait. Get a booster shot,” and reiterated that the best way to protect against the virus is to get a vaccine.
President Biden encouraged everyone to wear a mask indoors.
He also said that the lockdown policy is not being discussed at this time, and he predicted that if people were vaccinated and wore masks, there would be no need.
He said he will share any new information as soon as it becomes available, he said, adding that it will take several weeks to see just how strong the vaccine currently in use is against Omicron.
He also announced that he would come up with a strategy to deal with Omicron on the 2nd of next month.
President Biden said the high number of Omicron cases required travel restrictions to some African countries, saying the restrictions gave time for more action.
However, he said he did not expect further travel restrictions.
