US President Joe Biden has officially announced plans to exclude Russia, which has invaded Ukraine, from the G20.

It also warned strongly that Russia would respond if it uses chemical weapons, and reaffirmed its will to make China pay a price for its aid to Russia.

President Biden held a press conference in Brussels, Belgium on the 24th (local time), and when asked if Russia should be expelled from the G20, he replied, “My answer is yes. It depends on the G20.”

He said that the issue of Russia’s withdrawal was discussed at the NATO summit, and that he proposed a plan to have Ukraine attend the G20 summit and observe if other countries, such as Indonesia, do not agree to the withdrawal, he said.

This year’s G20 chair country is Indonesia, and the summit is scheduled for October.

President Biden said Russia’s use of chemical weapons in the Ukraine war “will trigger a response” and that “the type of response will depend on the type of use”.

Regarding the possibility of China’s aid to Russia, “China understands that its economy is much more closely linked to the West than Russia,” he said.

President Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin had mistakenly predicted that NATO would split over Ukraine, saying, “NATO has never been as united as it is today.”

President Biden said the U.S. has provided more than $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine so far, with an additional $1 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine and $320 million in the restoration of democracy and protection of human rights.

He also said he would welcome 100,000 Ukrainians to the United States to reunite with their families.
