Big tech companies such as Facebook, Microsoft (MS) and Google are sweeping away promising companies and talents related to major metaverse technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) around the world. Korea is no exception to their collection list.
Overseas IT companies are conducting job offers for domestic developers in all directions. They offer higher wages than large companies, support remote work environments for work convenience, and are in contact with universities to secure young talent.
There are concerns in the related industry that the next metaverse market could become a solo stage for big tech companies that monopolize a large-scale manpower pool.
According to related industries on the 23rd, companies around the world, including global IT companies, Europe, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates, are sending love calls to Korean developers.
Job offers from global companies are mainly done through LinkedIn, a business-oriented SNS. If you were active in a developer community such as Stack Overflow, there are cases where you received a job offer through a personal email or Instagram.
As there is still a shortage of professional metaverse talents worldwide, even students who are researching at universities and graduate schools are coming in with job offers. Two graduate students who were researching XR at Seoul National University’s lab recently joined Facebook.
As the number of job offers from big tech companies increases, the number of turnover cases is also increasing. It is known that more than 20 experts have moved to big tech companies in the past three years. This is because the average annual salary is three times that of large companies in Korea, and the working conditions are superior.
Being able to increase one’s own value by participating in large-scale projects that can lead the world is also considered one of the major factors in switching to a global IT company.
In particular, the transition to telecommuting significantly lowered the barriers to entry. This is because there is no need to consider migration, the biggest obstacle to finding a job abroad.
An executive from a large corporation said, “Metaverse developers have a high global rarity because there are times when they do not see the light of day when they are intertwined with AI, and their annual salary is in the range of 300,000 to 500,000 dollars. However, it is a situation that needs to be improved further for global competition.”
In the related industry, it is pointed out that in order not to be deprived of the metaverse developers that foreign companies are targeting, domestic companies must establish a similar level of work environment.
It is necessary to create a work environment that guarantees individual freedom in a vertical and rigid structure in terms of wages and corporate culture.
An official said, “The metaverse, which combines AR, VR, and reality, is very difficult to train professional developers because the existing development methods and philosophies are quite different. We need to come up with a way to make good use of it.”
