Kottayam: A block panchayat member threatened to kill himself with a kerosene bottle in protest of the officials’ attempt to stone the Wagareil project. The K-Rail-Anti-Silver Line People’s Committee and the locals had blocked the laying of stones for the Vegare rail project in Kallungal in Panachikad panchayath in the last few days. Officials who arrived again yesterday morning were also stopped. Pallam block panchayat member Sibi John Kaitha threatened to kill himself when police tried to forcibly remove MPs and locals. With this, the police withdrew.
After discussions with Deputy Collector Mohammad Rafi and K-Rail Land Acquisition Special Tehsildar Rosni Hydros, the officials returned without stoning. The strike committee said the officials had informed them that the issues would be brought to the notice of the collector and further action would be taken in consultation with the people’s representatives.
