The Hong Kong Government announced that from Sunday, when passengers board a flight to Hong Kong, airlines must require relevant Hong Kong residents to present their Hong Kong SAR passport or Hong Kong permanent identity card as proof; they do not possess other valid travel documents Hong Kong permanent residents of non-Chinese nationality can apply for a visa identity document from the Immigration Department for international travel.

The Hong Kong government stated that the Chinese and British governments had long agreed on how to deal with Hong Kong people holding BNO, and in 1984 they exchanged a memorandum to confirm that the British clearly promised not to grant them the right of abode in the UK. Therefore, the current practice of the British side fundamentally violates the British Party’s commitment in the memorandum. The spokesman also described the British arrangement as a political hype, as an excuse to provide a new path for Hong Kong people to stay and naturalize in the UK. In addition to political purposes, the British measures will also earn a lot of their own economic benefits.
