The court has rejected the petition that was filed by President Jair Bolsonaro trying to cancel the electoral victory of Lula da Silva for the office of President of Brazil. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court also fined Bolsonaro’s coalition parties 22.9 lakh Brazilian Syrians (Rs 35.12 crore). The penalty is filing an unnecessary petition which damages the credibility of the electoral system.

Bolsonaro’s coalition petition alleged irregularities in the vote counting machine. In the second round of elections held on October 30, Lula da Silva, leader of the left-wing Workers’ Party, won 50.9 percent of the vote. Jair Bolsonaro, leader of the extreme right Liberal Party, received 49.1 percent of the vote. Bolsonaro’s term as president ends on December 31. Lula da Silva will take over as president on January 1.
