Brady Ebert, a former guitarist for the Baltimore-based hardcore punk band Turnstile, has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly hitting the father of the band’s lead vocalist, Brendan Yates, with his car. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Silver Spring, Maryland.
According to a news release from the Montgomery County Department of Police, Ebert, 33, allegedly struck William Yates, 78, with a 2001 Buick following an argument in the victim’s driveway. Ebert then left the scene without contacting emergency services or providing aid. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the collision, police stated.
William Yates was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg. Turnstile confirmed in a statement that Yates is the father of frontman Brendan Yates.
‘Targeted Attack’ and Prior Threats
The incident is being described as a “targeted attack” by authorities. During a court hearing on Thursday, Montgomery County District Court Judge Sherri Koch ordered Ebert to be held without bond, citing the violent and targeted nature of the allegations. Ebert appeared via video conference and spoke against the advice of his attorney, John Costello, proclaiming his innocence.
Turnstile revealed that they “cut ties” with Ebert in 2022 due to “a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band and the community.” The band further stated that Ebert “began threatening violence” around that time, and those threats “escalated further” in the months leading up to the alleged hit-and-run.
Ebert’s History with Turnstile
Ebert was a founding member of Turnstile, which has risen to prominence in the hardcore music scene, even earning a Grammy Award. He departed from the band in 2022. The circumstances surrounding his exit were previously attributed to the “harmful behavior” outlined in the band’s recent statement.

The charges against Ebert include attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault. He faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
Police Investigation and Evidence
The Montgomery County Police Department responded to a call regarding a hit-and-run incident at approximately 4:41 p.m. On March 29th. Responding officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel arrived at the scene to find William Yates injured. The police investigation quickly focused on Ebert, leading to his arrest this week.
The use of surveillance footage was crucial in identifying Ebert and establishing the sequence of events. Police have not released the footage publicly at this time.
Turnstile’s Response
While Turnstile has not released extensive public statements beyond confirming William Yates as the victim and detailing their prior separation from Ebert, the band’s initial statement underscores the seriousness of the situation and their concern for Yates’ well-being.
“The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg,”
