(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Kyung-yun = England will step on the stage of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) for the first time ever.

The British baseball team won the final of the 2023 WBC qualifier against Spain in Regensburg, Germany on the 21st (Korea time), winning 10-9 after a melee match, which was the first among the participating countries to progress to the finals.

Established in 2006, the WBC has been held four times until 2017, and England have never reached the finals.

On that day, England scored 8-9 in the bottom of the ninth with one out, and Toronto Blue Jays prospect Jaden Rudd hit a solo home run to tie the game.

England, which held a scoreless defense in the early 10th inning of the overtime penalty, won the 10th inning strikeout with Alex Crosby’s final sacrifice fly of the independent league.

Spain, who lost to England, will play the losers’ group final against the Czech Republic, with the winning team progressing to the finals.

Korea will automatically progress to the 2023 WBC finals, and will play Group B in the first round of the tournament at Tokyo Dome, Japan from March 9 to 13 next year.
