(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoon-seop Jeong = Former idol star Brooke Shields (56), who dominated the American entertainment industry in the 1980s, burst into laughter as he recalled the controversy over the sensationalism of a Calvin Klein jeans advertisement filmed as a teenager.

Shields said in an interview with fashion magazine Vogue on the 29th (local time) that she was “naive” when filming a jeans TV commercial for Calvin Klein 40 years ago and did not know if the advertisement contained a sensational message.

In 1980, at the age of 15, Shields was at the center of controversy with an advertisement for Calvin Klein jeans.

Shields’ lines in the ad were criticized for having sexually suggestive messages and sexualizing young girls.

Shields’ advertisement provoked a strong backlash from the conservative American society at the time, and airwaves such as ABC and CBS stopped sending advertisements.

In response, Shields said that she filmed a jeans ad at the suggestion of her mother, and had no idea that the ad could be sensational.

“I didn’t know that the jeans ad would be interpreted for any other purpose,” he said. “I thought I knew a lot better than I really did, but I was naive.”

Calvin Klein sparked controversy by producing provocative advertisements that challenged the taboo of sexual expression, including those of Shields at the time.

However, the so-called ‘noise marketing’ effect of Shields’ advertisement was very effective, and Calvin Klein jeans and underwear were sold with the support of young Americans.

Shields also credited Calvin Klein as a commercial success because of his advertising.

“Calvin Klein knew how to push the limits and established that trend for decades,” he said.
