A humpback whale nicknamed Timmy has successfully freed itself from a sandbank off the German coast after becoming stranded earlier this week, according to multiple Dutch and German news outlets reporting on April 20, 2026.

The whale, which had been monitored by marine rescuers and local authorities since becoming trapped near the island of Poel in the Baltic Sea, managed to swim free under its own power during high tide on Tuesday morning. Initial reports from De Telegraaf and NOS indicated that Timmy had briefly dislodged itself from the sandbank but later became re-stranded, prompting concern among wildlife experts.

By midday, however, the whale had regained mobility and swam out of the bay near Poel under its own strength, as confirmed by NU.nl and Trouw. The animal’s movements were tracked by coast guard vessels and marine biologists from the German Maritime Museum and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) group, who maintained a safe distance to avoid causing stress.

Although the whale initially appeared to be heading back toward deeper waters, AD.nl reported that it temporarily swam in the wrong direction, moving parallel to the shore before correcting its course. Experts noted that such behavior is not uncommon in disoriented cetaceans, particularly after prolonged stranding events, and emphasized that Timmy showed no signs of injury or distress during its reorientation.

Marine rescue teams from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the Dutch Whale Protection Foundation had prepared for a possible intervention but stood down as the whale regained strength and navigation. Officials confirmed that no boats, drones, or acoustic deterrents were used to guide the animal, in line with protocols designed to minimize human interference during natural recoveries.

Humpback whales are occasional visitors to the North and Baltic Seas, typically migrating between feeding grounds in the Arctic and breeding areas in tropical waters. While strandings are rare, they do occur, often linked to navigational errors, illness, or underwater noise pollution. The BfN stated that post-stranding monitoring would continue for several days to ensure Timmy does not return to shallow waters.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the whale was last seen swimming steadily northeast toward the Danish straits, moving at a consistent pace consistent with normal migration behavior. No further strandings have been reported, and authorities have ceased active monitoring, relying instead on passive satellite tracking if the whale had been tagged — though no tagging occurred in this case.

The incident drew attention across the Netherlands and Germany, with local residents and tourists gathering at a safe distance to observe the rescue efforts. Wildlife officials urged the public to avoid approaching stranded marine mammals and to report sightings to designated hotlines rather than attempting direct intervention.
