The Russia-Ukraine War has been going on for 9 months, and it seems that it has no intention of stopping. NATO countries that have provided military aid to Ukraine since the beginning are also showing signs of tiredness According to the “New York Times” citing Western officials, the Ukrainian army is currently using a staggering number of artillery shells, and 20 NATO members say they have exhausted the resources they can provide.

According to the report, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, European countries cut defense budgets, military sizes and arsenals, because no one expected that there would be another war in Europe one day. And how terrible is eating bullets in Ukraine? The report compared Afghanistan, where NATO forces fire about 300 rounds a day, to Ukraine, which fires thousands of rounds a day and needs help with air defense. Camille Grande, former assistant secretary general of NATO and now a defense expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said, “A day in Ukraine is a month or more in Afghanistan.”
Western countries are now trying different channels to get more artillery weapons, including buying from countries like South Korea. NATO has even discussed whether to invest in old factories in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bulgaria to manufacture of 152mm and 122mm artillery shells of the standard Soviet Standard to supply to Ukraine.
So far, NATO countries have provided weapons and equipment worth about US$40 billion (about NT$1.28 billion) to Ukraine, which is almost equivalent to France’s annual defense budget. A NATO official said some of the smaller members had run out of what they could offer, with 20 of the alliance’s 30 members saying they were “very tired”. If the war continues in the future, I am afraid that even the western countries will not be able to bear it.
