They insist on expanding the use of the safe fare system, but the government’s position is that it will respond harshly and without tolerance to illegal actions, so ‘gang-to-gang’ conflict seems inevitable.

The Cargo Workers Union held a ceremony for a general strike this morning.

Workers stopped trucks and trucks in 16 logistics centers across the country and chanted slogans demanding the expansion of the safe fare system.

Cargo Solidarity said, “Nearly 700 people die a year from truck accidents,” and said, “The safe freight rate system is the only legal system that can protect cargo workers.”

The police are prepared for emergencies.

The South Gyeonggi Police Agency sent 1,200 people in 17 companies to logistics centers such as Uiwang ICD.

It is policy that strict action will be taken if the cargo union is involved in illegal activities such as interfering with the transport of non-union members vehicles or obstructing the workplace.

Major ports are preparing for a prolonged strike by bringing in export cargo early and securing temporary storage facilities to store containers.

The government has made it clear that it will respond strongly to illegal strikes.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong said that if the cargo union continues to refuse transport, he may issue an order to start transport as a minister.

If a transport worker refuses to do so, he or she can be fined up to 30 million won or imprisoned for up to three years.

Prime Minister Han Deok-soo also said at a meeting of ministers related to upcoming state affairs this morning that he hoped the Korea Cargo Workers Union would make a sweeping decision considering the dire economic conditions.

He emphasized that if logistics are disrupted, strict action will be taken in accordance with the law and principles.
