New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been arrested on charges of racial slurs. Indian cricketer Yusvendra Chehal has been arrested for racially abusing him. Yuvraj, who was arrested by Hansi police, was later released on interim bail. The actor was released on bail after a three – hour interrogation. The actor was arrested under the SC / ST Act of the Indian Penal Code.
Hansi SP Nitika Gellot said the player was arrested on Saturday. The SP later said that the actor was later granted bail. Yuvraj’s phone was reportedly seized. Police have registered a case against Yuvraj based on a complaint lodged by Rajat Kalsan, a Dalit activist and lawyer.
Yuvraj made the controversial remarks during an Instagram live chat with Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma in April 2020. Yuvraj used the word against Chehal to ridicule the lower castes. Despite being an innocent joke, Yuvraj’s choice of words for ridicule angered Dalit organizations and a section of fans.
With this, the Hindi hashtag (# युवराज_सिंह_माफी_मांगो) asking Yuvraj to apologize was widespread on social media. Yuvraj, who has even beaten cancer, has been criticized for not being able to defeat racism.
Yusvendra Chehal was active on social media making videos in Tiktok after the country was locked down following the Kovid expansion. Chehal Tiktok was videotaped with the participation of even his family members. Yuvraj made the controversial remark during a live chat on Instagram to mock Chehl. Even Yuvraj was unaware of the controversy in the flow of the conversation, but the fans came out strongly against it.
Yuvraj had publicly expressed regret over the incident. He made it clear that he did not believe in racial segregation. Following this, a complaint was lodged with the Haryana Police against the actor. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed that Yuvraj be released on bail even if he is arrested. Yuvraj was also directed to co-operate with the investigation.
