Jessna Maria, 20, daughter of James Joseph, a native of Vechochira, went missing on March 22, 2018. In February 2021, the High Court referred the case to the CBI as Jesse could not be traced despite several changes by the investigating agencies.

The lookout notice was issued a year after the CBI took over the case. The CBI said it had issued a yellow notice to Interpol as part of its probe into the case. The notice issued by the CBI said that if any information was found to be helpful to the case, it should be informed and the details of the informants would be kept confidential. The notice was issued with signs and information to help identify Jasna.

Jessa was a second year BCom student at St. Dominic’s College, Kanjirapally. On the day of the disappearance, Jesse, who had gone to a relative’s house in Mundakkayam Punchavayal, was never seen again. The police started the investigation after the father lodged a complaint stating that his daughter had not returned. The investigation was carried out first by the local police and later by a team led by the IG. Mundakkayam questioned his classmate following a rumor that he had gone with a friend in Punchavayal but was convinced that the incident did not matter. The investigation also focused on tens of thousands of phone calls with the help of cyber experts; No results.

The disappearance also led to riots in the Assembly. The crime branch later took over the case. Police conducted investigations in Bengaluru, Pune, Goa and Chennai. The crime branch investigation was preceded by CCTV footage. CCTV footage showed Jesse going as far as Erumeli.

It is clear that there are two other suspects in the walking scenes of the girl who is believed to be Jesse. It is unknown at this time what he meant by this statement. Police set up information boxes in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts. The DGP had also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to Jesse’s death.

In May 2020, the matter took a turn for the worse when Crime Branch ADGP Tomin Thachankari revealed that he had received some clear information about Jesse. Following the news, the then district police chief KG Simon visited Jesna’s house in Vechoochira, which led to rumors. Meanwhile, there was a rumor that he had met Jesse in Bangalore. But the finding was that that too was not true. The probe into Jesse’s disappearance has been extended across India. The team is still investigating.
