Chairman Mong-gyu Chung, today (17th) announced his position on the collapse of the outer wall of Gwangju Hwajeong I-Park

HDC Group Chairman Mong-gyu Chung announces his position today (17th) in relation to the collapse of the outer wall of Hwajeong I-Park in Gwangju.

Hyundai Development Company announced yesterday that “there will be an announcement of Chairman Mong-gyu Chung’s position at HDC Hyundai Development Company’s Yongsan office building at 10 am today.”

Chairman Mong-gyu Chung is expected to comment on the issue of his own place along with an apology to the public for the accident.

Chairman Jeong went down to the site of the accident in Gwangju on the 12th, the day after the accident, and discussed the accident management plan and future measures with Yoo Byung-gyu, CEO of Hyundai Development Company.

Afterwards, it was reported that he came up to his home in Seoul on the weekend (15th) and is reviewing the problem of his place along with a fundamental remedy.

Although Chairman Chung resigned as CEO of Hyundai Development Company in 2018 when the group was converted to a holding company system, he still maintains the position of chairman of Hyundai Development Company and is involved in management, such as making decisions on major issues.

Some are not ruling out the possibility that Chairman Chung himself as well as the management will resign together.

Chairman Mong-gyu Chung served as Chairman of Hyundai Motor Company from 1996 to 1998. After that, the management rights of Hyundai Motor passed to Chairman Chung Mong-koo, and he moved to Hyundai Development Company in March 1999 together with his father, the late Hyundai Motor Honorary Chairman Jeong Se-young.

Hyundai Development Company caused a large-scale fatal accident in the process of demolition of the redevelopment area in Gwangju in June of last year, followed by the collapse of the outer wall of the I-Park Apartment in Hwajeong, Gwangju, which was being built on the 11th, seven months later.
