Scuderia Ferrari’s decision to give Charles Leclerc a new engine at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix came after two failures in the last three races. Leclerc retired from the lead at both the Spanish and Azerbaijan Grand Prix due to F1 power unit issues.
The problem in Spain was the loss of the turbo and MGU-H, and a failure in Baku made the F1 power unit unrepairable. Already in anticipation of replacing the power unit on Saturday, I was running with soft tires for the second free practice session on Friday.
Charles Leclerc is disappointed with the recent slump, but recently said the promising pace of the overall fastest car in one lap is encouraging the future.
“We are aware of the pace of the car and we are confident in it,” said Charles Leclerc.
“I know reliability is clearly an issue in the last three races, but performance is there. So if you fix these issues, you can fight Red Bull for the championship.”
