Chile: A Land of Vast Proportions
When one thinks of Chile, a small South American nation may come to mind. However, in comparison to the Kingdom of Thailand, Chile boasts an area twice the size. This independent state, known officially as the Republic of Chile, stretches out in an awe-inspiring manner, as depicted in the accompanying image.
A Long and Narrow Stretch of Splendor
Tucked away in the western part of South America, Chile nestles itself between the imposing Andes Mountains and the vast Pacific Ocean. With a whopping area of 756,096 square kilometers (291,930 sq mi), Chile plays host to a population of 17.5 million as of 2017. The country proudly claims the title of being the southernmost nation in the world, with its proximity to Antarctica truly embracing its extremity.
Chile shares borders with Peru in the north, Bolivia in the northeast, and Argentina to the east. Further south, it reaches the renowned Drake Strait. In addition to the mainland, Chile’s control extends over various islands in the Pacific Ocean, including the Juan Fernandez Islands, Salas To Gomez Island, Desventuradas Islands, and Easter Island. The nation also asserts ownership over a vast expanse of approximately 1,250,000 square kilometers (480,000 square miles) as the Antarctic Territory of Chile.
