A total of 5,245 people have died.

Meanwhile, an official at the center said on Monday that it would eventually release case data on a monthly basis once the new coronavirus infection falls under the “B” control category. Until now, the strictest control level was required, but it has been announced that this will be lowered.

Huaxi Hospital in the southwestern city of Chengdu has been busy dealing with patients since the easing of restrictions on the new coronavirus on the 7th. On the night of the 27th, long queues formed at the emergency and fever outpatient clinics. The majority of patients brought in by ambulance were wearing oxygen masks.

An ambulance driver waiting outside the hospital said, “I’ve been doing this job for 30 years, but now is the busiest.”

“Almost every patient is infected with Covid-19,” said an emergency department pharmacy staff member. Hospitals are out of stock of medicines for Covid-19 and are prescribing medicines to relieve cough and other symptoms, he said.

Officials at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital said most of the recent patients were elderly with underlying medical conditions and were in critical condition, according to state media. He said the number of patients receiving emergency medical care had increased to 450-550 per day, up from about 100 per day.

The fever outpatient clinic at the Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing is also said to be full of elderly patients.

Doctors and nurses are asked to work when they are sick, and retired health workers are being re-employed in rural areas. In some cities, it is becoming difficult to secure antipyretic drugs.
