China and the U.S. reach an enhanced climate action declaration at the UN COP26 conference

Today, China and the United States, which have differences on many issues, reached consensus on environmental protection issues at the recent UN COP26 conference. Both sides are aware of the current global average temperature control status, and there is a certain gap between the 2 degrees Celsius or even 1.5 degrees Celsius target proposed in the Paris Agreement. In order to improve this situation, the two countries issued the “China-US Joint Declaration on Strengthening Climate Action in the 2020s”, hoping to strengthen it “on the basis of common but differentiated responsibilities and the principles of respective capabilities, and taking into account the national conditions of each country.” Climate action to effectively respond to the climate crisis.

The specific actions that the two sides will take in the future have not yet been announced. However, China and the United States have planned to establish a working group to catch the door and hold regular meetings to “address the climate crisis and promote multilateral processes, focusing on strengthening specific actions in this decade.” The two countries are expected to hold a meeting in the first half of 2022 to strengthen methane measurement and emission reduction issues, and plan to report their nationally determined contributions for 2035 in 2025.
