China confirms DNA identity of all 132 victims of plane crash

Chinese authorities said on the 28th that the identities of all 132 victims of the crashed China Eastern Airlines flight were confirmed through DNA testing.

Zhu Tao, director of the Aviation Safety Office of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said at a briefing that the identities of all victims were confirmed by collecting DNA samples from 132 passengers and their relatives, state media reported.

Search teams will now focus on identifying victims’ belongings and recovering plane wreckage.

Chinese authorities are working on the inspection of the two black boxes of the airliner that were collected. The cause of the plane crash is still unclear.

The chief said the rescue team found 36,001 aircraft wreckage around the crash site.

Flight MU5735 belonging to China Eastern Airlines crashed in a mountainous area in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on the 21st from Kunming, Yunnan Province to Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

A total of 132 people were on board the plane, including 123 passengers, the captain and 9 crew members, but all died.

President Xi Jinping and the Chinese leadership held a silent tribute to the victims of the plane crash ahead of a meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the 28th.
